Scenic Byways

Two of my favorite things are driving and nature. When I have the opportunity to combine the two, I never pass it up. Back in North Carolina, I would drive 3 hours just to be able to cruise down the Blue Ridge Parkway and experience the magnificent mountains. In the Adirondacks, the scenic byways present beautiful views for visitors along with easy transportation through the large park land. The park utilizes scenic byways as a tourist attraction by playing on the idea that many individuals appreciate driving and nature.

Driving is a favorite pastime and it allows you to free your mind while getting from place to place. Similarly, nature is a place to free your mind and become one with the wilderness. When the two are combined, it is hard to not feel peaceful and content. The scenic byways act as trails to both back country and front country attractions. By consolidating the parks best attractions and simplifying how you get to them, the park has created an enjoyable driving experience for the tourists of the park. The roads also act as an attraction themselves. The park facilitates a Tour de ‘Dacks where bike enthusiasts can pedal down the roads with the wind in their helmets. Similarly, many motorcyclists enjoy speeding down the roads while getting a first hand view at the beauty of the park.

The byways provide not only a method to see the park from up close, but also a way to get to all the best attractions. Without the scenic byways, the park would struggle to get tourists to the interior of the park. People don’t usually think of roads as being beautiful but the scenic byways are definitely one of the most beautiful and widely appreciated things in the park.

  1. My favorite drive is along the winding roads leading up to Yosemite National Park in California. These roads overlook unfathomable views that I'll never quite be able to explain because of the absolute magnificence. I totally resonate with you in that I will cherish these drives forever. It makes me so happy that so many people have access to these parks and the scenic views within them because they are truly life changing!

  2. I am such a fan of the scenic byways in the Adirondacks. They are easy-to-drive roads, cutting in and out of the mountains, ponds, and lakes. Gorgeous views of a gorgeous area.
