A Wildlife Friendly Home

Previously I had written a post addressing the importance of natural corridors both within the park and also connecting the park to other wilderness areas. While I was researching this topic I learned about different efforts to preserve these corridors and ways of working with the community to ensure that the landscape stays as wildlife friendly as possible. Unfortunately in that post I was not able to thoroughly explore the ways of making developed areas wildlife sensitive.  While looking into the subject I came across a great article in Adirondack Like about the effects of a house on the surrounding wildlife and different ways of mitigating the disturbances. Both the structure and our daily activities can affect the surrounding wildlife. These activities “cast a wildlife shadow over 15 to 30 acres.” Even though a property can be modestly built in a natural area, it can still have large impacts on the surrounding wildlife.  
            The wildlife shadow can be impacted by different activities including noise and light pollution as well as landscaping and gardening. Starting with the house itself, it is important to keep inside vegetation away from the windows and make sure that they do not reflect outside vegetation. Birds are attracted to this reflection and are often injured or die when they hit the glass. It is also important that outdoor lighting is only used when necessary and that it points down. This will minimize light pollution, which can disrupt the behavior of wildlife in the surrounding area. One architectural suggestion that I had not thought about before was the proximity of a house to the main road and the length of the driveway. Having a long driveway has always been indicative of a private setting. While it may seem like your property is more natural by having a long driveway, it is actually a large disturbance for the surrounding wildlife. A long driveway breaks up the surrounding area and disrupts the range of certain species. It is important to build a house closer to the road when possible as to not break up the natural landscape around. Many of these practices are common sense, yet are often overlooked.

            Creating a home that is wildlife sensitive means more than just developing in a natural setting. It takes careful planning and consideration of the surrounding fauna and flora.  It is important to keep this in mind when developing in the Adirondacks. Since more than 60% of the park is privately owned, we must depend on private landowners to maintain a property that can coexist with the wildlife. More and more properties are being built every year, which increase the chances of habit fragmentation and wildlife displacement. This increase risk of disruption means that it is imperative for Adirondack homeowners to take these practices into strong consideration to ensure that the park can stay as wild as possible.

When we spoke about Environmental Regulation in class this Monday, I remembered something that my high school chemistry teacher told me shortly after the release of the film Gasland. He said that one of the most frustrating things about fracking’s success is that it hasn’t been playing by the same rules, like the Clean Air Act, as other fossil fuels. In the same conversation, he also told me that- if he could do it all again-Environmental Justice was way more important than chemistry.
Now, as we discuss the same issues, I decided to look back and see just how natural gas fits in to our legislation. The table above is the result of this research and, unfortunately, exhibits quite explicit trends. What were relatively strict and restrictive policies towards the protection of human and environmental health have been silently eroded since their inception.
 It is important to mention that there have been many improvements in Environmental Protection and EPA overreach since the ‘70s and they have not been included above. The amendments shown are exceptions that have been extended to oil and gas that also contained many more regulations and modernizations. Draw what conclusions you may about party lines and lobby sway but, it is my opinion that these exemptions run in direct conflict with the trend towards more regulation informed by greater understanding, data and outreach.  
Part of the reasoning for so much Oil and Gas Regulation scale back under Bush II was an assertion that State Regulatory Bodies could maintain pollution levels much more efficiently than a national organization. After reading about how pollution in the Midwest deposits acid rain in the Adirondacks, I find it impossible to see pollution as an individual states right or responsibility. Globally, carbon emissions could lead some to argue that even nations lack the right to damage an entire planet. But that is another blogpost entirely.
Heeding my professors’ advice, I drew pictures on my Senior AP Chem test. I have also used every opportunity since to learn more about the American and International Environmental Justice system. What I have learned now is shameful, but hopefully new amendments will come that might restore some integrity to the fundamental tenants of American Environmental Protection. 

Ice Fishing in the Adirondacks




During the class discussion Monday, we discussed how Lake Champlain froze over this past winter (2014-2015) and the implications of the freeze over from a climate change perspective. However, we only looked at Lake Champlain from an environmental perspective. From the perspective of ice fishers, news of Lake Champlain freezing over couldn’t sound better.

Ice fishing is a complicated sport requiring a specific technical skill set and takes practice to achieve success. Ice fishers, or anglers, use ice augers to drill through the ice then have three options to catch fish: jig-fishing, tip-ups, or spear fishing. Jig fishing is where the angler uses a small, light fishing rod with bait on the tip and pulls up the rod occasionally, producing a “jig” effect. Tip-up fishing is where the angler uses a tip up tool (see below), attaching a fishing line to the tool and 3 pieces of bait to varying depths of the line. When the tool tilts, the angler pulls up the line. Spear fishing is where an angler uses decoys to draw fish to the surface before catching them on a spear. As if freezing cold weather and icy conditions weren’t enough, ice fishing is extremely challenging because fish metabolism slows down in the winter, thereby making tugs on the line nearly impossible to detect.


Norm St. Pierre is the owner of Norm’s Bait and Tackle at Crown Point in the Adirondack Park who sees hundreds of ice fishermen pass through the Adirondacks every season. In the article “Gold Under the Ice” from Adirondack Life, Norm highlights the success of the Adirondack region, producing between 200,000 and 745,000 pounds of fish in the past year (partially due to the easy access because of Lake Champlain’s freezing over).

Yet, anglers in the Adirondacks still face many challenges, despite a prolonged time on the ice of Lake Champlain. In the “Gold Under the Ice” article, one man Ross details how about 10% of anglers catch 90% of the fish, thus making it extremely hard for newcomers to the sport. Additionally, high levels of mercury contaminating lakes prevent anglers from selling the inedible fish.  

Ice fishing is a challenging job that is heavily reliant on external conditions and the skills fishermen have using tools. Though many Adirondack anglers have had success recently, factors such as mercury contamination still limit anglers. From my perspective, I could see ice fishing either completely failing, where current anglers would need to pay to ice fish or ice fishing could become a new, successful faction of the tourist industry.
