Ski Season in the Adirondacks Already

Ski season is starting early in the Adirondacks! According to the article, ski season is started today (Sunday) for Gore and Whiteface Mountains. The facilities at Gore have been making snow since Wednesday and have almost two miles of continuous skiing, while Whiteface has been making snow for about a week in addition to natural snowfall.

So, even before Thanksgiving, the main winter industry in the Adirondacks is beginning! It is interesting that, even though there hasn't been as much natural snow in the Adirondacks in recent years, the snow season has started earlier and earlier because of mountains' abilities to make snow. Last year, the mountains in the Adirondacks opened on November 15th (one day earlier), which was the second earliest opening ever since the 1986-87 winter.

Obviously, the earlier the mountains can open, the more money is brought into the Adirondacks. Even one weekend late would mean a huge loss in potential revenue.

A major problem here is global warming. If the first snowfall comes later each year, the ski season will be shorter, and the Adirondack region will lose a major economic draw.

But, for now, the ski season has started!
