I think this article is interesting because it brings up Darwin and the entire topic of evolution. I get the sense that Zimmer is saying that if invasive species outcompete native species, then their consequent extinction is a mere byproduct of evolution and we (humans) are fighting an eventuality that is hundreds of years in the making. The underlying question is really "Why bother?"
